Take a trip to
the desert when you choose Red Rock Canyon as your next vacation
destination. Located just outside Las Vegas, you can take a day trip
to help relieve the stress of playing the tables. Here you will see
many geological wonders of the world and some of the most impressive
scenery you will veer see.
Keystone Thrust is one of the most impressive features of this
canyon. The thrust is a fault line where one plate of the earth's
crust rises above the other. It is believed that this happened about
65 million years ago with a violent collision of the earth's plates.
The fault extends from the Cottonwood Fault to the area of the La
Madre Mountains -0 a distance of about 13 miles.
Take a drive along 13-mile Loop Drive to enjoy the many beautiful
sights. Calico Vista has two viewing points from which you can take
pictures of the Aztec sandstone. There is also evidence of
prehistoric quarry work at the Sandstone Quarry. If you want to stop
for a picnic, there are sites located at Picnic Springs and Willow
Springs. The area is a prime location for hikers of all
capabilities, with trails that are easy, moderate and strenuous. The
many small canyons are perfect for exploration and there are many
fossils along the way dating back to the Triassic period.
If you do want to hike in this area, it is important that you bring
water with you. It is desert area with hot temperatures, so you can
become dehydrated very quickly. The multitude of hotels in the Las
Vegas area assure you of accommodations, but it is best to have your
reservations made in advance of your arrival.
